Elizabeth 1- I chose this image because of the amount of pearls used and jewellery this is symbolizing her innocence and purity. She also has the tudor rose in this image and hand over the globe to show that she is the mother of all the world. Elizabeth clothes changed as she got older. She wore slim fitting dresses and as she got older she wore large puffy outfits. Her make up in this image pale which they used white lead on the face and ceruse and then on top of that they used a egg glaze on top. The white paste was used to stop wrinkles.

For a long time, particularly within the twenty-first century makeup artists have sought inspiration from the fashion, film and television industry. This often stems from a more dramatic or raw approach to passing on a sense of emotion or passion ; the techniques used often employ extreme colour, style, fashion, and movement in ways which challenge particularly the present day makeup artists and photographers.

I initially looked at the relationship between the makeup and the way the characters movement on a photographer set or a film set. Makeup helps the person wearing it to see it visually so they know how to respond to it verbally or through movement.

I started looking at the makeup artist Alex Box who is an only child in Grimsby, Box’s artistic streak showed itself early on: “The minute I could grab something to draw or paint with, I did.” During her teenage years, she submerged herself in the subcultures of fashion, art and music. Her artistic skill took her to the prestigious fine art degree at Chelsea College of Art where she discovered the body as a new canvas. Alex Box is a make-up artist and creative director of Illamasqua, Alex Box is instrumental in shaping the brand’s product development, imagery and creative vision from conception to execution. Her masterful work with shade, texture, and contrast brings to life the fantasy and creativity inherent in everyone, inspiring them to explore and express their alter ego. Her installation-based work challenged and explored the relationship between the body, environment and desire to a pure form. As well as her site specific installations, Alex has exhibited in numerous London and international art galleries. She has contributed to Vogue, i-D and Dazed & Confused, and a book about her work, The Makeup Artist, was shot by Rankin. Alex Box is an unconventional makeup artist whose amazing creations have adorned the faces of models for Karl Lagerfeld and Avant Garde British designer, Gareth Pugh. With a background in fine art, Box has become known for pushing the boundaries of makeup, taking it to a whole new level. Alex Box has a way of making her work come to life, she is well know from being vague about her work to clients before she applies the makeup but from building up a strong reputation there is no doubt that her work will be outstanding. Her work is very emotionally driven, aided by music, paintings, fairytales and folklore. It’s manifesting monsters and angels. The model’s face guides Alex Box and she can feels spiritually connected to people as she puts the make-up on.

To me Alex Box is such a inspiration as she has managed to create her own brand her work has a certain signature look in the way she uses colour, it’s always bright and sometime scattered. She creates movement and music with the colour with the different brush strokes. Normally she has a central structure whether it’s a bright yellow paint down the face or the eyes are really over exaggerated with black cartoon makeup, you are always drawn to some aspect of the face.

Her work is unconventional and in today’s society everything is about fashion and beauty but her work isn’t about having perfect skin and beautiful smoky eyes it’s about creating a piece of art and she making it look beautiful and elegant in its own right.

 The true definition of how I see makeup is that its art. Applying makeup is an art itself, but the finished piece is what excites me. My inspiration comes from past and present art, from people and colours and the cosmetic products available around me. I love makeup and consider it a very important tool to help not only enhance your own natural beauty, but to build confidence for everyday life. When you feel good, you look good, and makeup helps you achieve this positive feeling.

In conclusion I think Alex Box is a new start to whole different world to makeup. More and more artist are wanting to be more weird to stand out more and more. Not just in the fashion industry but in all industries. Being different now is seen as a good thing whereas we all lived in a box following each other hoping we didn’t look different to others. Alex Box is an inspiration to many other makeup artists and she has got to work with some amazing actors and fashion designers. Her work is unconventional but even so she has managed to create her own style that works for many stylist and fashion designers.

Skin Diseases- What are there?

Skin Diseases

Acne

Acne is a very common skins disease the symptoms being blackheads or whiteheads and spots. It commonly starts at puberty appearing on back, chest or face. Acne usually calms down by the twenties or late twenties. The cause of acne is due to the amount of testosterone.

Bowen’s Disease

Bowen’s disease is also known as intraepidermal squamous cell carcinoma, and is a growth of cancerous cells that is confined to the outer layer of the skin. Most cases of Bowen’s disease develop as a result of long-term sun exposure. Very occasionally, Bowen’s disease may be seen in the context of previous radiotherapy.

Contact Dermatitis

Dermatitis means an inflammation of the skin. The term ‘contact dermatitis’ is used when this inflammation is caused by contact with something in the environment.

Eczema

Atopic eczema is an inflammatory condition of the skin. Atopic is the term used to describe conditions such as eczema, asthma, seasonal rhinitis and hay fever, which often have a genetic basis.

Herpes Simplex

Herpes simplex is an infection of the skin with the herpes simplex virus. This can be caught from another person after direct skin-to-skin contact, mouth contact, or sexual contact. The first time the virus is caught, it does not always show up on the skin, but can lie dormant within special parts of the sensory nerves .

Impetigo

Impetigo is a bacterial infection of the surface of the skin. In the it is the most common skin infection seen in young children.

Keloids

When a wound heals, it leaves a scar. A keloid is a special type of scar: one that grows too much and can even become larger than the original wound. It is not uncommon for surgical or injury scars to become a little lumpy. There are different types of Keloids

Melanoma

Cutaneous malignant melanoma is a cancer of the pigment cells of the skin.  If it is treated early, the outlook is usually good.  It is not contagious.

Shingles

Shingles (also known as herpes zoster) is a painful blistering rash caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. If you have had chickenpox it can live on for a while in a dominant state.

Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a condition in which areas of skin lose their normal pigment and so become white. It is common, and affects about 1% of the world’s population.

The image in the photo straight away reminded me of a posed wedding photo. Especially with the bouquet of flowers in each hand and the floating white dress. I definitely would say this is a professional portrait with the professional lighting and the flowers used as props. I would say the image was taken at a prepared ceremony mainly because of the items of clothing, and the jewellery worn. The flowers were used to make a statement I feel as though they were used to blend with the background. I also think because she is looking away at an angle instead of directly at the camera makes it more intriguing as she might be looking at someone possibly her husband or maybe looking towards her future. I think that both the subject appears in control of the environment because the woman is central focus holding flowers which the flowers are similar to the background. I think the background is supportive to the subject because at wedding it’s a ceremony where flowers are usually used and she has a sense of purity like flowers have. And on a wedding night you wear white to show your innocence and harmony. The woman in the image is in the centre of the image as she is the centre piece but she has her face turned. I possibly think she is looking at someone or something it looks quite serious so maybe looking at her husband. Her hand is slightly raised on one side this looks like she is offering it to someone which is like the tradition of throwing the bouquet at a wedding. The photographer was trying make you think that she might be at a wedding or appear like a woodland nymph with the floating white dress it definitely makes her have a sense of purity. The image looks as though it has been cropped because she is looking at something and we can’t see what I is which could change the whole story of the image. Also she doesn’t look very happy which could have been caught at a bad time. I would say the image is aimed towards the British public because they are trying to make her look innocent and purer towards that audience because she was twice divorced and could not marry Edward Prince of Wales. Because of Wallis Simpsons two divorces this image is trying to offset the social stigma associated with divorce amongst the British upper classes in the 1930s.

Elizabethan Make up

The Elizabethan used very extreme make up on there face to create a very pale and pasty face. They used white lead or white paste on there face which actually burnt there skin. They would use egg white as a glaze on top. This egg white created a tight complexion to stop wrinkles showing and kept the white paste in place.They used fecus on cheeks and lips this is a plant based material.

In the image above you can see the very fine detail of Elizabeth's clothes and make up. In many of her portraits she uses small items that show her personality and has a lot of symbolism. In this one she is holding a madalion which has a horse and a man riding it with a spear. It could mean a sign of war and how she conquered the spanish armada. Or how she is of such great power and such dominance.

I think the style of the pearls really connect to Alex Box make up on the face of the other image. I also think the texture around the neck is also very similar to to Alex Box piece.
